A stamping die is used to cut shapes from a sheet of metal. A sharp edged die is placed on the metal and hammered until it cuts through the underlying metal.

Stamps: These are made of metal and normally look like a spike or a large nail. On the end of the stamp is a relief with the marking you want such as your initials, name, or logo.

Stamping

Check the hallmarking on the piece (ie 14K stamped on inside of ring), and be sure it matches what the salesperson tells you the piece is. Be careful of phrases such as "solid gold plate" or "gold-filled".

According to the LBMA Good Delivery Rules, all bars must have marks that include, the stamp of the refiner, the assay mark, the fineness, the serial number and the year of manufacture.
