TEKTITES
Overview: Tektites are suspected of being of meteoric origin. They are rich in silica similar to natural glass (obsidian). Their name comes from the Greek word 'tektos', meaning 'molten'.

Tektite comes from the Greek word tektos, meaning molten and was the name given by Edward Suess, a professor at the University of Vienna.

You might mistake these small, black blobs for bits of asphalt, but they are actually glassy stones formed by a meteor crash.

Tektites: Another group of natural glasses, known collectively as "tektites", are not found associated with volcanic eruptions, but rather in places which are believed to have been sites of meteoric impact.

Tektites are also widely used by Aboriginal people. The tribes knew these glassy stones fell from the sky and used them to connect with the sky spirits.

Tektites have been found in many places, from the north to the south of Vietnam. Essentially they are recovered from the highlands of the Tay Nguyen province (Kon Tum and Lam Dong) and the Phu Quoc island.

Moldavite is a silica-based tektite, a mineral formed when a meteorite (a rock from space) struck the Earth's surface and melted and fused the surrounding rock.

Moldavite is a gemstone in the tektite group. It exhibits a bottle-green to brown-green color. On Mohs' scale of hardness, moldavite is 5.5. A natural glass, moldavite has a vitreous luster.

A member of the tektite family, it is believed to be the outer surface of meteorites, that fused and melted during entry into our atmosphere. Inclusions of gas bubbles and iron/nickel spherules are common.

Moldavite is a variety of tektite, first found in 1787 and named after the Moldau river valley in Bohemia, Czech Republic, where it occurs.
Moldavite is sometimes cut and polished as an ornamental stone under the name of pseudo-chrysolite.

Silicon is a principal component of aerolites which are a class of meteoroids and also of tektites which is a natural form of glass.
