Treated diamond

Treated Diamonds: A diamond with a body color induced by some form of artificial irradiation, often in conjunction with controlled heating (known as annealing).

Treated diamonds are not considered to be as good an investment as natural ones. Also, colors created through treatment can change over time.

It is not strictly illegal, but it is illegal to pass off a radiation-treated diamond as authentically fancy. This is also a way to disguise noticeable internal flaws that would be too obvious in a pale stone, and mask them with color infusion.

You should also ask your jeweler, if the diamond you are considering buying is treated to enhance color or cover flaws. A treated diamond should cost less than a natural diamond.

In the rarer cases where radiation extends to the crown, a black ring within the girdle can be seen. In any event, cyclone-treated diamonds are rarely encountered in gemological examination practice.

Ask your jeweler about fancy color diamonds, if they do not have any naturally colored diamonds, they may have some that have been treated for color (the treated diamonds are far more affordable than their naturally colored counterparts).

Fancy colour grades are decribed as faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy, fancy intense and fancy dark in the GIA system. Treated diamonds are not considered fancy diamonds, ...
