The blue sapphire and some fine violet-blue, light red, pink, and yellow sapphires, were also found. None of these gems had a higher value than a hundred dollars.

(One source actually said synthetic yellow sapphire, but this would have taken a prohibitively long time to cut and polish due to the immense size of the replica and the fact sapphire is a very tough stone, being a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Yellow sapphires from this locality are magnificent, and may reach sizes of several hundred carats. These large stones are museum pieces, yet are surprisingly inexpensive despite their great rarity.

For example, natural yellow sapphires from Ceylon show a distinctive apricot-colored fluorescence, while synthetic yellow sapphires generally show no fluorescence or a dull red when exposed to long-wave ultraviolet (UV) light.

When of very fine yellow color the yellow sapphire is sometimes called "Oriental topaz" by jewelers, the term "Oriental" as thus used indicating that the material is corundum.

The Umba river valley, in Tanzania, produces most of these colors including lovely canary yellow sapphire and African Padparadscha, a pastel orangy pink, which is highly prized and very rare.

For example, yellow sapphires can lose color when heated (although sometimes that color may return). To be safe, jewelers should take any yellow sapphire out of its setting before beginning a repair.

Ruby is the variety name for red corundum, yellow sapphire is yellow corundum and star sapphire is translucent to opaque corundum that shows the optical phenomenon of asterism (forms a star figure from reflected light).

Yellow sapphires the size of several hundred carats have been found in Sri Lanka, as well as pink and violet, which are much rarer than blue sapphires. Other sources of Sapphire are Thailand, Australia, and Cambodia.

Since then, not only have there been enough blue sapphires in the trade, but also some splendid pink and yellow sapphires of great beauty and transparency.

Yellow is extremely evocative and most exacting when interpreted with yellow sapphires or diamonds, whose hues are brilliant and alluring.

It may remind you of yellow sapphire, topaz, tourmaline, or citrine. But next to the other attention-grabbing varieties, plain faceted chrysoberyl is often overlooked. As a result this gem is surprisingly affordable.

Corundum is called ruby or sapphire, depending on the color which depends on which metallic oxides are present: Rubies contain chromic oxide, blue sapphires contain titanium, yellow sapphires contain ferric oxide.
