It was first thought to be sapphire, but the mineral was later identified as zoisite.

Discovered by Baron von Zois in the Sau-Alp Mountains of Austria. Zoisite was first called Saualpite. It occurs in a number of varieties (see Tanzanite and Thulite). It has a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs Scale.

The name given to a gem which when a cabochon cut shows a single light streak across its face. A variety of quartz found in South Africa, it may be yellowish-brown, bluish, or red in color.
The pleochroism is strong, the pleochroic colors being usually green, yellow and brown. Clinozoisite is white or pale rose-red variety containing very little iron, thus having the same chemical composition as the orthorhombic mineral zoisite.
Tanzanite is the purplish blue variety of the mineral zoisite that was found for the first time in 1967 and named after the East African country of its birth by Tiffany & Co. of New York, which introduced the gemstone to the world market in 1969.
Finally, multi colour transparent zoisites (fancy tanzanites) are also sought, particularly green and pink. On extremely rare occasion, collectible cat's eye tanzanites are fashioned.
