BENEFICE - Obs. Land given by the lord to a vassal, for the vassal's use. it remains the property of the lord, and is not inheritable, in the old sense of the word's use. This changed after 875 A.D.
BENEFICE, eccles. law. In its most extended sense, any ecclesiastical preferment or dignity; but in its more limited sense, it is applied only to rectories and vicarages.
The Benefices Act of 1898 did not make any substantial change in the legal character of advowsons, which remain practically the same as before the act.
