Copies cannot be given in evidence unless proof is made that the originals, from which they are taken, are lost or in the power of the opposite party; and in the latter case, that notice has been given him to produce the original.

Copies include such things as books, magazines, photocopies, computer disks, and tape recordings. The exclusive right to prepare copies of an original work is one of the primary rights protected by a copyright.
