CORONER, an ancient officer of the English common law, so called, according to Coke, because he was a keeper of the pleas of the crown (custos placitorum coronae).

Coroner
A county officer whose resposibility is to inquire the cause of death of a person who dies sudden death under violent or mysterious circumstances or in prison.

CORONER - Part Obs. An officer whose principal duty it is to hold an inquisition or inquest, sometimes with the assistance of a jury, over the body of any person who may have come to a violent or suspicious death, or who has died in prison.

Coroner
A public official who holds an inquiry into violent or suspicious deaths. A coroner has the power to summon people to the inquest.
