hypothetical question - An imaginary situation, incorporating facts previously admitted into evidence, upon which an expert witness is permitted to give an opinion as to a condition resulting from the situation.

"Hypothetical questions may properly be put to a witness where the witness has expertise and when the hypothetical question is relevant to some issue in the case, provided the question is not overly broad or vague.

They consider only actual controversies, not hypothetical questions about the Constitution. Congress cannot, for example, ask the Supreme Court for its advice about whether a bill is constitutional.
