Notice of Appeal: Notice to the Court and to the other parties to the suit that a party intends to exercise his right of appeal. Filing the notice of appeal in the district court is the first step in making the appeal.

Allowance, Notice of: A written notice by a patent office that an applicant is entitled to a patent on an invention. An issue fee must be paid within the period for response or the application will become abandoned.

Actual notice occurs when an individual is directly told about something -- for example, when a tenant notifies the landlord that a window is broken, the landlord has actual notice of the broken window.
