OPEN ADOPTION: An adoption in which the birth mother may retain some visitation privileges.

Open adoption
An adoption in which there is some degree of contact between the birthparents and the adoptive parents and sometimes with the child as well.

An open adoption permits the birth mother to select her child's adoptive parents.

Since the 1970s, however, a growing number of adopted children have attempted to identify their birth parents, and "open adoption," in which adoptive and birth parents maintain a relationship, has become more accepted.
