Polygamy
n. An illegal practice of having more than one wife or husband during the same time, more precisely having more than two spouses at the same time which is called bigamy.This is considered crime in most states and communities.

Polygamy was sanctioned in biblical times. Kings and the upper classes were permitted more than one wife (Gen 29:18, 25, 30; Deut 21:15; Judg 8:30; I Kgs 11:1-8; II Chr 11:21).

The end of marriage proves that polygamy, (q. v.) and polyendry, (q. v.) are contrary to the law of nature. Hence it follows that the husband and wife have a mutual and exclusive right over each other.

Polygamy is the proper term; but, by long usage, bigamy has come to mean the state of a man who has two wives, or a woman who has two husbands, at the same time. 4 Bl. Com. 163; 81 Pa. 432, 430; 1 law Quar. Rev. 474-76 (1885).
