Pretrial Services
A department of the district court that conducts an investigation of a criminal defendant's background in order to help a judge decide whether to release the defendant into the community before trial.

pretrial services: Services provided by a local agency to investigate a criminal defendant's background so a judge can decide whether or not to release the defendant from custody before trial.

probation officers (or pretrial services officers) : Screen applicants for pretrial release and monitor convicted offenders released under court supervision.
