GENERALLY ACCEPTED ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES (GAAP) - Term used to describe broadly the body of principles that governs the accounting for financial transactions underlying the preparation of a set of financial statements.

Case Law - Case law is the general term for the legal principles "developed by judges" in determining legal disputes and is recorded in judicial decisions or judgments. It is often referred to as common law or judge made law or precedent.

Judges will generally "follow precedent," meaning that they use the principles established in earlier cases to decide new cases dealing with similar facts and legal issues.

A dissenting opinion disagrees with the majority opinion because of the reasoning and/or the principles of law on which the decision is based. A concurring opinion agrees with the decision of the court but offers further comment.
