pro hac vice: The status of a lawyer that gets special permission to try 1 case in California because he or she is licensed to practice law in another state.

Pro Hac Vice Taking the place of for this occasion. Most often used to describe the status of a lawyer who is permitted to appear on behalf of his client in a court outside his jurisdiction, e.g.

exercise his business as a public employment; he must undertake to carry goods for persons generally; and he must hold himself out as ready to engage in the transportation of goods for hire, as a business; not as a casual occupation pro hac vice.
