This is typically achieved by the filing of an affidavit of service[2] (also known as a proof of service[3]), which gives enough information to allow the court to confirm that valid service has been accomplished.
On proof of service of a subpoena upon the witness, and that he is material, a citation may be issued against him or her for contempt, or (conceivably) a bench warrant for his or her arrest may be issued, if he or she neglects to attend as commanded.
