(n) A referee is the person who was appointed by a court to study any particular aspects of the case referred to him and report to the court his or her finding.

remand"To send back". For example, an appellate court may remand a case to a lower court for retrial.

Referee: Judges who reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 may be designated as Judge Trial Referees by the Chief Justice and can hear and decide certain types of cases.

REFEREE. A person to whom has been referred a matter in dispute, in order that he may settle it. His judgment is called an award. Vide Arbitrator; Reference.

referee: A person appointed by the court to hear and make decisions on limited legal matters, like juvenile or traffic offenses.

Mediation: Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution, similar in many ways to arbitration in that the parties to a personal injury case come together before a neutral referee (the mediator) in an effort to resolve their dispute.

When a trial is referred to a referee or judicial hearing officer to hear and report, the JHO or referee will hear the case but instead of issuing a decision, a report will be written, which is non binding on the parties.
