Referendum
(n) Referendum is defined as the placing of an issue, existing or proposed statute, proposal or action etc.

 


A referendum is the procedure by which a decision is referred to the electorate who vote on it in a similar way to a general election.

Initiatives and Referendums
The voting results on important questions of public policy are commonly known as referendums or propositions. These results decide whether a policy becomes law or whether a state constitution will be revised or amended.

Only in the case of the Twenty-first Amendment (repealing prohibition) has the convention system been used. In many U.S. states, a proposed amendment to the state constitution must be submitted to the voters in a referendum.
