REPRISALS, war. The forcibly taking a thing by one nation which belonged to another, in return or satisfaction for a injury committed by the latter on the former. Vatt. B., 2, ch. 18, s. 342; 1 Bl. Com. ch. 7.
They are supposed to proceed without fear of reprisals from the judges or fellow lawyers. They are not even supposed to consider the financial rewards promised ... or the lack thereof.
Their home state may point out or protest injustice and may also threaten reprisals; such situations have frequently caused international disputes.
The integrity of the judicial system depends on the participants' acting honestly and without fear of reprisals. Threatening a judge, trying to bribe a witness, or encouraging the destruction of evidence are examples of obstruction of justice.
To make a good capture of a ship, it must be subdued and taken by an enemy in open war, or by way of reprisals, or by a pirate, and with intent to deprive the owner of it.
