Clear air mode is the normal mode of operation and is used when there is no significant precipitation in the area. In this mode the radar is VERY sensitive and will detect even minute echoes.

Air is forced to flow against and over a mountain range in a short period of time. The air cools as it rises up the mountain range, cloud forms and rain or snow falls.

Air MassA large body of air with nearly uniform temperature and moisture content. There are six recognised airmasses that affect the British Isles denoted by their source region and then subsequent track.

air mass classification—A system used to identify and to characterize the different air masses according to a basic scheme.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL (ATC) - A service provided by the FAA which helps promote the safe operation and orderly flow of air traffic. ALTIMETER - An instrument which indicates your flight altitude by sensing air pressure changes and displaying it in feet.

Air mass: a body of air covering a relatively wide area and exhibiting horizontally uniform properties. Air pollutant: harmful substance or product introduced into the atmosphere.

Air Mass - A large body of air, usually 1600 diameters or more across, that is characterized by homogeneous physical properties at any given altitude.

air is stable if it is at the same density as surrounding air, so it will not tend to rise or fall but will tend to remain in place ...

Cold air moves over a body of water such as the Great Lakes. Moisture and warmth as picked up from the warmer bodies of water. (Remember, the Great Lakes don't freeze!) That air is now warmer and therefore rises in the atmosphere.

Cold- air Funnel - A funnel cloud or (rarely) a small, relatively weak tornado that can develop from a small shower or thunderstorm when the air aloft is unusually cold (hence the name). They are much less violent than other types of tornadoes.

Air that flows in relation to the earth's surface, generally horizontally. There are four areas of wind that are measured: direction, speed, character ( gusts and squalls), and shifts.

Cool air can flow down the slopes of a branched valley system like the water in the stream that made the valley. The flow can even reverse during the day, and the warm air flows upstream.

The ' air-mass' zero degree level is relatively straightforward to forecast.

W0040 Air chaud Particule d' air dont la température est élevée en elle-même, ou plus élevée que celle de la surface sous-jacente, ou des particules d' air environnant. W0050 Warm anticyclone (W0090) ...

Stable Air - Air that is colder than its surroundings and as such is resistant to upward movement. Trough - An elongated area of low pressure.

Channeled High WindsIn mountainous areas or in cities with tall buildings, air may be channeled through constricted passages producing high winds.
