Meteorology AlgorithmAltimeter Setting

altimeter
An instrument that indicates the altitude (1) of an object with respect to a reference level such as sea level; examples include pressure altimeters and radio altimeters .
anemometer ...

Altimeter An instrument that indicates the altitude of an object above a fixed level. Pressure altimeters use an aneroid barometer with a scale graduated in altitude instead of pressure.

altimeter setting indicator—A precision aneroid barometer calibrated to indicate directly the altimeter setting.
altitude—Height expressed in units of distance above a reference plane, usually above mean sea level or above ground.

altimeter: an instrument that measures the altitude of something with respect to a set level.
altitude: the vertical distance above a certain level, usually sea level or ground level.

Altimeter - an instrument for measuring the altitude with respect to a fixed level
Altocumulus - a mid-level cloud which occurs as a layer or patch with a wavy appearance and is typically white and/or gray ...

Altimeter An aneroid barometer calibrated to read in altitude or elevation.
Altocumulus clouds (Ac) Middle clouds consisting of roll-like patches or puffs forming a wavy pattern.

Altimeter - An aneroid barometer calibrated to indicate altitude instead of pressure.
Altitude (of the Sun) - The angle of the Sun above the horizon (sun angle).

Altimeter setting- That pressure value to which an aircraft altimeter scale is set so that it will indicate the altitude above mean sea-level of an aircraft on the ground at the location for which the value was determined.

ALTIMETER
An instrument used to determine the altitude of an object with respect to a fixed level. The type normally used by meteorologists measures the altitude with respect to sea level pressure.
ALTIMETER SETTING ...

Altimeter An active instrument (see active system) used to measure the altitude of an object above a fixed level. For example, a laser altimeter can measure height from a spacecraft to an icesheet.

radar altimeter"(Also called radio altimeter.) An onboard radar for determining the altitude of an aircraft above an underlying surface.

Altimeter:................A instrument onboard an aircraft, (Aneroid Barometer) calibrated to measure altitude in feet.
Altimeter Setting:..The value to which the altimeter is set to indicate true altitude at the airport elevation.

Altimeter/Barometer Features include altitude measurement from -1500' to 21,000', memory for maximum and minimum height, accumulative vertical ascent/descent, altitude history bar graph for the past 12 hours, weather forecast, alarm clock, ...

ALTIMETER - An instrument which indicates your flight altitude by sensing air pressure changes and displaying it in feet.
ANABATIC WIND - A current of air which flows up a slope due to heating from the surface.

An Altimeter set to QFE will read zero when the aircraft is on the runway.
QNH ...

The altimeter setting in aviation, set either QNH or QFE, is another atmospheric pressure reduced to sea level, but the method of making this reduction differs slightly. See altimeter.

PRESSURE ALTIMETER An aneroid barometer calibrated to indicate altitude in feet instead of units of pressure. It is read accurately only in a standard atmosphere and when the correct altimeter setting is used.

Quasi-nonhydrostatic (QNH) Pilots, air traffic control (ATC) and low frequency weather beacons use this pressure setting to refer to the barometric altimeter setting that causes the altimeter to read altitude above mean sea level within a certain ...

Standard AtmosphereA hypothetical vertical distribution of atmospheric temperature, pressure, and density that, by international agreement, is taken to be representative of the atmosphere for purposes of pressure altimeter calibrations, ...

The pressure setting used by aircraft altimeters to give an indication above MSL. The QNH pressure calculation assumes a standard ICAO atmosphere.

A hypothetical vertical distribution of temperature, pressure and density which, by international consent, is taken to be representative of the atmosphere for purposes of pressure altimeter calibrations, aircraft performance calculations, ...

Tailored to the needs of aviation, these reports describe current conditions such as air temperature, dew point, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, altimeter setting, visibility, and cloud ceiling.

code used in the United States to satisfy requirements for reporting surface meteorological data. Minimum reporting requirements includes wind, visibility, runway visual range, present weather, sky condition, temperature, dew point, and altimeter ...

over a 19-year period, usually determined from the hourly heights observed above a fixed reference level. (2) In aerology, the reference surface for all altitudes. (3) In aviation, the level above which altitude is measured by a pressure altimeter.
