Altocumulus clouds are composed primarily of water droplets and are located between 6,500 and 20,000 feet (2,000 to 6,000 meters) above the ground.

Altocumulus (Ac) A principal middle level cloud type (cloud genus), white or gray, or both white and gray, which occurs as a layer or patch with a wave aspect, the elements of which appear as laminae, rounded masses, rolls, etc.

Altocumulus (Ac) - the name derives from the latin words altus = high and cumulus = mass or heap. Altocumulus is a member of the ten fundamental cloud types (or cloud genera).

altocumulus undulatus"See undulatus.
altocumulus"(Abbreviated Ac.) A principal cloud type (cloud genus), white and/or gray in color, that occurs as a layer or patch with a waved aspect, the elements of which appear as laminae, rounded masses, ...

Altocumulus
Middle level layered cloud, rippled elements, generally white, sky showing through.

ALTOCUMULUS: Mid-altitude clouds with a cumuliform shape.
ALTOSTRATUS: Mid-altitude clouds with a flat sheet-like shape.
ANEMOMETER: An instrument that measures wind speed.

Altocumulus castellanus An altocumulus showing vertical development, individual cloud elements have towerlike tops, often in the shape of tiny castles.

altocumulus: a middle cloud type that is white and/or gray in color and occurs as a layer or patch with a waved aspect. Generally have shadowed parts.

Altocumulus lenticularis A lens-shaped altocumulus cloud; a mountain-wave cloud generated by the disturbance of horizontal airflow by a prominent mountain range.

ALTOCUMULUS Composed of flattened, thick, gray, globular masses, this middle cloud genus is primarily made of water droplets. In the mid-latitudes, cloud bases are usually found between 8,000 and 18,000 feet.

altocumulus castellanus—A species of middle cloud of which at least a fraction of its upper part presents some vertically developed, ...

Altocumulus
White or gray, or both white and gray, patch, sheet, or layer of cloud.

Altocumulus
(Ac) Mid-level cloud (bases generally 2000 - 8000m), made up of grey, puffy masses, sometimes appearing in parallel waves or bands. An indicator of mid-level instability.

Altocumulus A middle cloud, usually white or gray. Often occurs in layers or patches with wavy, rounded masses or rolls.

ALTOCUMULUS CASTELLANUS
A middle cloud with vertical development that forms from altocumulus clouds. It is composed primarily of ice crystals in its higher portions and characterized by its turrets, protuberances, or crenelated tops.

Altocumulus Castellanus (ACCAS) They are middle level convective clouds and possibly they should be classified as clouds with extensive vertical development. They are composed of mainly water vapor.

Altocumulus
A cloud of a class characterized by globular masses or rolls in layers or patches, the individual elements being larger and darker than those of cirrocumulus and smaller than those of stratocumulus.

ALTOCUMULUS: A principal cloud type, white and/or gray in color, present in the mid-altitudes with a cumuliform-like shape.
ALTOSTRATUS: A principal cloud type, gray or bluish in color, present in the mid-altitudes with a sheet or fibrous appearance.

Altocumulus cloud as seen from the space shuttle. Altocumulus is formed through convective activity.

Altocumulus - Alto (medium altitude, 8000 to 24000 feet or 2400 to 6100 m) + cumulus (piles). Balls or rolls of cloud at medium height.
Altostratus - Alto + stratus (layers). Sheets of uniform gray cloud at medium altitude.

ALTOCUMULUS - Mid level convective clouds resembling cumulus. Composed of water droplets and / or ice crystals. Common in unstable atmospheres. Abbreviated as AC.

Sometimes it is confused with altocumulus, however, it has smaller individual masses and does not cast a shadow on other elements.

Altocumulus, altostratus, and nimbostratus are the main types of middle clouds. This altitude applies to the temperate zone. In the polar regions, these clouds may be found at lower altitudes.

Mackerel Clouds: High altocumulus clouds which appear to look like fish scales.
Macroburst: A sudden downburst of wind that affects an area on the ground that is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) or longer.

The ten cloud genera are cirrus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus, altocumulus, altostratus, nimbostratus, stratocumulus, stratus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus.

altocumulus (midlevel puffy clouds)
often form in a patchwork or in rolls
high clouds
cirrus (wispy, "mare's tails")
cirrostratus (high altitude flat, layerd cloud) ...

ACCAS (pronounced ACK-kas) - Altocumulus Castellanus; midlevel clouds (bases generally 8 to 15 thousand feet), of which at least a fraction of their upper parts show cumulus type development.

Middle Clouds: In the middle family are the altostratus, altocumulus, and nimbostratus clouds. The height of the bases of these clouds ranges from 6,500 to 23,000 feet in middle latitudes.

However, meteorologists (who think differently from normal people) readily associate these letters with the international observation code for altocumulus clouds. These are common summertime clouds which form in the middle layers of the atmosphere.

can be divided even further to 4 sub-groups describing altitude: 20,000 ft and above are the cirrus or cirro clouds (cirrocumulus, cirrostratus), composed of mostly ice crystals; from 6,500 to 20,000ft are the alto clouds (altostratus, altocumulus); ...

Virga: Virga is falling precipitation (rain, snow or ice crystals) that evaporates before reaching the ground, appearing as streaks or wisps of precipitation terminating in mid-air. Typically, it falls from altocumulus, altostratus, ...

In the 'Medium' cloud class come: Altostratus (As); Altocumulus (Ac) and Nimbostratus (Ns). Nimbostratus often has a base within the 'low' cloud category.
In the 'High' cloud group are: Cirrus (Ci); Cirrocumulus (Cc) and Cirrostratus (Cs).

They are made of water droplets and include altostratus and altocumulus. Low clouds are found up to 6,500 feet and include the stratocumulus and nimbostratus clouds. When stratus clouds contact the ground they are called fog.

ROTGRotatingRotor CloudA turbulent altocumulus cloud formation found in the lee of some mountain barriers when winds cross the barrier at high speed. The air in the cloud rotates around an axis parallel to the range. Also called a roll cloud.

Medium cloudAltostratus, altocumulus and nimbostratus.MeteorologyThe study of the physics, chemistry, and dynamics of the atmosphere and the direct effects of the atmosphere upon the Earth's surface, the oceans, and life in general.

It is usually seen in thin cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, and altocumulus clouds.
