Meteorology Altocumulus castellanusAmounts

Altostratus (As) A principal middle level cloud type (cloud genus) in the form of a grayish (gray) or bluish cloud sheet or layer of striated, fibrous, or uniform appearance, totally or partly covering the sky.

altostratus" (Abbreviated As.) A principal cloud type (cloud genus) in the form of a gray or bluish (never white) sheet or layer of striated, fibrous, or uniform appearance.

ALTOSTRATUS: Mid-altitude clouds with a flat sheet-like shape.
ANEMOMETER: An instrument that measures wind speed.
ANTICYCLONE: A large area of high pressure around which the winds blow clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.

Altostratus
Middle level grey sheet, thinner layer allows sun to appear as through ground glass.

ALTOSTRATUS -Mid-altitude clouds with a flat sheet-like shape.
AMPLIFICATION: (AMPLFCTN)- Building, or sharpening, of an upper level high pressure ridge or low pressure trough.

altostratus: a middle cloud type that appears as a gray or bluish sheet of stretched out, fibrous, or uniform appearance. Overcast clouds.
anemometer: an instrument that measures wind speed.

Altostratus
Grayish or bluish cloud sheet or layer of stratified, fibrous or uniform appearance, totally or partly covering the sky, and having parts thin enough to reveal the Sun at least vaguely, as through ground glass.

Altostratus A middle cloud composed of gray or bluish sheets or layers of uniform appearance. In the thinner regions, the sun or moon usually appears dimly visible.

Altostratus - a mid-level cloud which occurs as a sheet or layer with a striated, fibrous, or uniform appearance and is gray or bluish (never white)
Ambient Air- the surrounding undisturbed outside air ...

Altostratus clouds (As) Middle layer clouds that are uniformly gray or bluish white.
Aneroid barometer A portable instrument that utilizes a flexible metal chamber and spring to measure air pressure; may be used as an altimeter.

ALTOSTRATUS This middle cloud genus is composed of water droplets, and sometimes ice crystals, In the mid-latitudes, cloud bases are generally found between 15,000 and 20,000 feet.

Altostratus
(As) Mid-level cloud composed of water droplets and ice crystals. Usually gives the sun a watery or dimly visible appearance.
Anabatic winds ...

Altostratus (As) It is a bluish veil or layer of clouds having a fibrous appearance. The outline of the sun may show dimly as through frosted glass. It often merges gradually into cirrostratus.

Altostratus
A cloud of a class characterized by a generally uniform gray sheet or layer, lighter in color than nimbostratus and darker than cirrostratus. These clouds are of medium altitude, about 8000 to 20,000 ft (2400-6100 m).

ALTOSTRATUS: A principal cloud type, gray or bluish in color, present in the mid-altitudes with a sheet or fibrous appearance.
ANEMOMETER: An instrument which measures wind speed.

Altostratus - Alto + stratus (layers). Sheets of uniform gray cloud at medium altitude.
Billow clouds - bands of cloud stretching across the wind field.
Cap cloud - one that sits still over a mountain ...

ALTOSTRATUS - Mid level layered clouds composed of either water droplets and / or ice crystals. Common around thunderstorm anvils and blowoff or ahead of an advancing low pressure system. May produce virga. Abbreviation is AS.

Chinook ArchA foehn cloud formation appearing as a bank of altostratus clouds east of the Rocky Mountains, heralding the approach of a chinook. It forms in the rising portion of standing waves on the lee side of the mountains.

Altocumulus, altostratus, and nimbostratus are the main types of middle clouds. This altitude applies to the temperate zone. In the polar regions, these clouds may be found at lower altitudes.

The ten cloud genera are cirrus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus, altocumulus, altostratus, nimbostratus, stratocumulus, stratus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus.

Cirrostratus may form by the merging of elements of cirrus, from ice crystals falling from cirrocumulus clouds, from the thinning of altostratus, or by spreading out of the cirrus plumes from the anvil of cumulonimbus clouds.

Further classification identifies clouds by height of cloud base.

altostratus (midlevel flat, layerd cloud)
a corona closely circles the sun or moon shining through altostratus
altocumulus (midlevel puffy clouds)
often form in a patchwork or in rolls
high clouds
cirrus (wispy, "mare's tails") ...

Middle Clouds: In the middle family are the altostratus, altocumulus, and nimbostratus clouds. The height of the bases of these clouds ranges from 6,500 to 23,000 feet in middle latitudes.

these can be divided even further to 4 sub-groups describing altitude: 20,000 ft and above are the cirrus or cirro clouds (cirrocumulus, cirrostratus), composed of mostly ice crystals; from 6,500 to 20,000ft are the alto clouds (altostratus, ...

In the 'Medium' cloud class come: Altostratus (As); Altocumulus (Ac) and Nimbostratus (Ns). Nimbostratus often has a base within the 'low' cloud category.
In the 'High' cloud group are: Cirrus (Ci); Cirrocumulus (Cc) and Cirrostratus (Cs).

They are made of water droplets and include altostratus and altocumulus. Low clouds are found up to 6,500 feet and include the stratocumulus and nimbostratus clouds. When stratus clouds contact the ground they are called fog.
