anabatic wind"In mountain meteorology, an upslope wind driven by heating (usually daytime insolation) at the slope surface under fair-weather conditions. The mechanism of the anabatic wind can be described as follows.

 


Anabatic winds
A local wind that flows up the side of valleys due to increased heating along the valley walls. Often the anabatic wind results in cumulus clouds along the ridges either side of the valley. See also Katabatic winds.

A wind that is created by air flowing uphill. Valley breezes, produced by local daytime heating, are an example of these winds. The opposite of a katabatic wind.

A wind that blows up the slope of a hill or mountain due to the sun heating the land.

ANABATIC WIND - A current of air which flows up a slope due to heating from the surface.
AN BOLT - Air force/Navy (AN) designated bolt with very high strength. Three marks on the head of the bolt identify it as an AN bolt.

Anabatic winds - winds that flow uphill, usually warm air near midday
Maloja winds - an unusual wind in Switzerland that does the opposite by going uphill at night and downhill during the day.

Anabatic winds (taken from the Greek word "anabatikos," meaning "to mount") are ascending or upslope winds, often the result of heating along valley slopes.

VALLEY BREEZE An anabatic wind, it is formed during the day by the heating of the valley floor. As the ground becomes warmer than the surrounding atmosphere, the lower levels of air heat and rise, flowing up the mountainsides.

Anabatic wind An upslope wind due to local surface heating. Opposite of katabatic wind. Analog Pertaining to measurements or devices in which the output varies continuously, i.e. voltage or rotation signals. Compare to digital.

There are also anabatic winds, that blow up a heated slope. Anabatic winds may occur at the same mountain front in the morning, when the slopes are heated by the sun.

Orographic precipitation, also known as relief precipitation, is precipitation generated by a forced upward movement of air upon encountering a physiographic upland (see anabatic wind).

Katabatic wind Any wind blowing down an incline; the opposite to anabatic wind. If the wind is warm, it is called a foehn; if cold, it may be a fall wind (bora), or a gravity wind (mountain wind).
