Arctic high

Meteorology Arctic frontArctic jet

Arctic high A weak high which appears over the Arctic Basin during late spring, summer and early autumn, one of the centers of action in the atmosphere.

arctic high"(Also called arctic anticyclone, polar anticyclone, polar high.) A weak high that appears on mean charts of sea level pressure over the Arctic basin during late spring, summer, and early autumn. Compare glacial anticyclone.

ARCTIC HIGH - a very cold high pressure that originates over the Arctic Ocean.
ASOS -Automated Surface Observing System. Observes sky conditions, temperature and dewpoint, wind direction and speed, and barometric pressure.

Arctic high Anticyclone originating in the source regions for cold, dry arctic air.
Atmosphere A thin envelope of gasses (also containing suspended solid and liquid particles and clouds) that encircles the globe.

Arctic highs, alone, rarely trigger precipitation because of the cloudless weather they produce. However, in combination with other weather-making systems, the cold air they bring can produce massive snowstorms.

Arctic air masses move about as a shallow area of high pressure, commonly known as an "Arctic High". Northerly winds associated with a cyclone and trailing anticyclone, (the center of the arctic air mass), transport the colder air southward.
