ASOS This is a National Weather Service acronym for Automated Surface Observing System.

 


ASOS: Automated Surface Observing System. Observes sky conditions, temperature and dewpoint, wind direction and speed, and barometric pressure.
AVHRR: Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer. Main sensor on U.S. polar orbiting satellites.

ASOS: Automated Surface Observing System. A network of instrumented weather stations deployed primarily by the U.S. National Weather Service to make weather observations without observer involvement.

ASOS- the Automated Surface Observation System; this system observes sky condition, weather, temperature, dew point, wind direction and speed, pressure and precipitation.

ASOS, AWOS, and AWSS units record temperature, visibility (haze or fog), precipitation types and amounts, wind direction and speed, humidity and dewpoint, barometric pressure and altimeter, sky cover and ceiling, and thunder.

The ASOS program is a joint effort of the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Defense (DOD).

When the complementary satellite product is not available, reports from unaugmented ASOS stations will report "fair" in the sky/weather column when there are few or no clouds (i.e., scattered or less) below 12, ...
