Autumnal Equinox - The equinox at which the sun approaches the Southern Hemispheres, marking the start of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. The time of this occurrence is approximately 22 September.

AUTUMN
The season of the year which occurs as the sun approaches the winter solstice, and characterized by decreasing temperatures in the mid-latitudes.

AUTUMNAL EQUINOX
A day of equal day and night that marks the beginning of fall and occurs when the sun passes directly over the equator.

Autumn
The season of the year that is the transition period from summer to winter, occurring as the sun approaches the winter solstice. Meteorological autumn (different from standard/astronomical autumn) begins September 1 and ends November 30.

Autumn - The season of the year that occurs after summer and before winter. Autumn officially begins in late September.

When these products break down they destroy stratospheric ozone, creating the Antarctic Ozone Hole in the Southern Hemisphere spring (Northern Hemisphere autumn).

Indian SummerAn unseasonably warm period near the middle of autumn, usually following a substantial period of cool weather.

The declination is ~23°N at the summer solstice, ~23°S at the winter solstice, and 0° (over the equator) at the spring and autumn equinoxes.

It falls on or about March 20 and is considered the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the astronomical opposite of the autumnal equinox.

Afterheat and Aftersummer These are very old terms used to refer to the warm pleasant days in the late autumn (at or after Indian Summer).

Currently, the most common measure of this period, “the average length of growing season,' is defined as the number of days between the average dates of the last killing frost (see frost) in spring and the first killing frost of autumn.

Autumn Equinox: Occurs on or about September 21.
Average Max Temperature: The average of the High temperatures over an extended period. EXM. 12hrs. 24hrs. Month, Years.

In meteorology for the Northern hemisphere, spring begins by convention on March 1, summer on June 1, autumn on September 1 and winter on December 1. This definition is also followed in Denmark and former USSR.

From that solstice to the autumnal equinox is Summer (June21-September 22). From that equinox to the winter solstice is Autumn (September 22-December 22). From that solstice to the vernal equinox is Winter (December 22-March 21).

SUMMER Astronomically, this is the period between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox. It is characterized as having the warmest temperatures of the year, except in some tropical regions.

Equinoxes The first days of spring and autumn when day and night are of equal length at all latitudes (except the poles) and the noon sun is directly over the equator.

Indian Summer A warm, calm spell of weather occurring in autumn, especially in October and November. Usually follows a substantial period of cool weather.

A term used for a period of warm settled weather in mid to late autumn.
Instability
A state of the atmosphere in which rising air is warmer than its surroundings and continues to rise.

Growing Season - The period of time between the last killing frost of spring and the first killing frost of autumn.
Gust - A brief sudden increase in wind speed. Generally the duration is less than 20 seconds and the fluctuation greater than 10 mph.

Spring - the three transition months September, October and November.
Summer - the three hottest months December, January and February.
Autumn - the transition months March, April and May.
Winter - the three coldest months June, July and August.
