Barotropic System
A weather system in which temperature and pressure surfaces are coincident, i.e., temperature is uniform (no temperature gradient) on a constant pressure surface.

Barotropic - A state of the atmosphere where isotherms are parallel to isobars. (This is actually known as equivalent barotropic.) No temperature advection occurs. Long waves are barotropic.

Barotropic System - the term barotropic system usually is used in a relative sense to describe systems in which the isotherms and height contours are nearly parallel everywhere on a surface of constant pressure; directional wind shear is weak; ...

BAROTROPIC- Horizontally fairly homogeneous troposphere in which there are neither fronts or any thermal advections.
BKN- Broken sky. 6/10 to 9/10 cloud coverage observed from the surface.

Barotropic
A situation where temperature and pressure surfaces are coincident, i.e., temperature is uniform (no temperature gradient) on a constant pressure surface.

BAROTROPIC- Homogeneous atmosphere in which there are neither fronts nor any thermal advections.

BAROMETER An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure.

Barotropic instability
Baroclinic instability
Convective instability
Kelvin-Helmholtz instability ...

equivalent barotropic model"An enhanced form of barotropic model in which the variation of wind with height is vertically averaged assuming that the thermal wind is in the same direction as the geostrophic wind at all heights.

COLD HIGH A high pressure system that has its coldest temperatures at or near the center of circulation, and horizontally, is thermally barotropic. It is shallow in nature, as circulation decreases with height.

As a rule, a true equivalent barotropic system can never be achieved in the real atmosphere.

baroclinic model A model of atmospheric circulation that, in contrast with barotropic models, does not constrain constant-pressure surfaces to coincide with constant-density surfaces.

(See Helmholtz instability, inertial instability, shearing instability, baroclinic instability, barotropic instability, rotational instability.) The space scale of unstable waves is important in meteorology: Thus Helmholtz, baroclinic, ...

Barotropic Atmosphere: Isotherms move in the same direction as the isobars or contours.
Beaufort Wind Scale:Admiral Francis Beaufort: Admiral in the Royal British Navy invented the "Beaufort Wind Scale 1806. Beaufort Wind Scale ...

Modeling for storm tracks and intensity based on winds and temperatures in several layers of the atmosphere. Variants of this model are the VICBAR MODEL (nested baratropic model) and the LBAR MODEN (Limited-Area Barotropic Model).
