Black Body

Meteorology Black blizzardBlack ice

Black body A hypothetical object that absorbs all of the radiation that strikes it. It also emits radiation at a maximum rate for its given temperature.

The rate at which a black body radiates energy across all wave-lengths.

An idealization exactly opposite to that of the black body. In nature, no true white bodies are known.

Experimental data show that radiation from the earth's natural surfaces is rather close to the radiation from a black body at the corresponding temperature; the ratio of the observed values of radiation to black body radiation is generally 0.

effective emissivityA correction factor, dependent on the radiational characteristics of the earth-atmosphere system, that permits application of black body radiation laws to the earth-atmosphere system.

Under some conditions it becomes possible to measure temperature by a direct use of the Planck's law of black body radiation.

EmissivityThe ability of a surface to emit radiant energy compared to that of a black body at the same temperature and with the same area.

The ability of a surface to emit radiant energy compared to that of a black body at the same temperature and with the same area.

Black Body:The Sun & the Earth are almost perfect "Black Bodies" which absorb and emit all wavelengths of radiation.
