Broken

Meteorology BRNBroken clouds

broken"Descriptive of a sky cover of from 0.6 to 0.9 (to the nearest tenth). This is applied only when obscuring phenomena aloft are present, that is, not when the sky cover is composed entirely of surface-based obscuring phenomena.

BROKEN CLOUDS: Clouds which cover between 6/10 and 9/10 of the sky.
CAA: Cold Air Advection.
CEILING: The height of the lowest layer of clouds, when the sky is broken or overcast.

CEILING: The height of the lowest layer of clouds, when the sky is broken or overcast.

BROKEN The amount of sky cover for a cloud layer between 5/8ths and 7/8ths, based on the summation layer amount for that layer.

Broken - a classification for sky cover used when 0.6 (six tenths) to 0.9 (nine tenths) of the sky is covered by clouds

Broken
Describes cloud cover when between 5/8ths to 7/8ths of the sky is obscured by cloud.

BKN- Broken sky. 6/10 to 9/10 cloud coverage observed from the surface.
BLACKBODY- A mass which absorbs and emits all wavelengths of radiation.

A broken swell wave travelling shorewards across the surf zone. See also tidal bore.
Breaker
A wave that has broken into foam.

SCUD - Low broken clouds usually found beneath thunderstorm cloud bases, near fronts, or near cooler rain outflow regions. Common acronym for Scattered Cumulus Under Deck.

Clear, Scattered, Broken, and Overcast These are the common terms used in aviation meteorology to refer to sky conditions. They are based on the percentage of sky obscured by clouds. The list below shows the criteria used:

SAND Loose particles of hard, broken rock or minerals. In observing, sand is reported when particles of sand are raised to sufficient height that reduces visibility. It is reported as "SA" in an observation and on the METAR.

CIGCeiling- The height of the lowest layer of clouds, when the sky is broken or overcast.CINConvective INhibition. A measure of the amount of energy needed in order to initiate convection.

These reports are broken up regionally. When the complementary satellite product is not available, reports from unaugmented ASOS stations will report "fair" in the sky/weather column when there are few or no clouds (i.e., scattered or less) below 12, ...

Ceiling The height ascribed to the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena when it is reported as broken, overcast, or obscuration and not classified as "thin" or "partial.

Although it is regarded as a 'single' ribbon of strength encircling the hemispheres, in reality the jet is broken and in developmental situations, can become very distorted with new jets re-forming at different levels from the 'main' baroclinic jet.

The squall line is a solid or broken line of thunderstorms with a continuous, well-developed gust front on the leading edge.

The five years leading up to Federation (January 1901) saw intermittent dry spells over most of the country, particularly in 1897 and 1899; in most of Queensland, dry conditions were virtually unbroken from 1897.

They are broken down by strong ultraviolet light in the stratosphere and release chlorine atoms that then deplete the ozone layer. CFCs are commonly used as refrigerants, solvents, and foam blowing agents.

Clear skies allow 100% of the incoming UV radiation from the sun to reach the surface, whereas scattered clouds transmit 89%, broken clouds transmit 73%, and overcast conditions transmit 31%.
