Meteorology ChaffChaos

CHANCE: A 30, 40 or 50 percent chance of occurrence of measurable precipitation.
CHINOOK WIND: A foehn wind on the east side of the Rocky Mountains.
CIRRIFORM: High altitude ice clouds with a very thin wispy appearance.

CHANCE: A 30, 40 or 50 percent chance of occurrence of measurable precipitation.
CIRRUS: High clouds, usually above 18,000 feet, composed of ice crystals.
CLEAR: Sky condition of less than 1/10 cloud coverage.

Chance A National Weather Service precipitation descriptor for 30%, 40%, or 50% chance of measurable precipitation (0.01"). When the precipitation is convective in nature, the term scattered is used. See Precipitation Probability (PoP).

Chance- A 30, 40 or 50 percent chance of occurrence of measurable precipitation.
Chinook Wind- A strong downslope wind that causes the air to warm rapidly as a result of compressive heating; called a foehn wind in Europe.

CHC- Chance (usually in reference to precipitation probability)
CI- Cirrus
CIN or CIN/S- Convective Inhibition. A cap which prevents convection from occurring. A CIN of 50 or below is weak while 200 and above is very strong.

Slight Chance
In probability of precipitation statements, usually equivalent to a 20 percent chance.
Slight Risk ...

Slight Chance: A National Weather Service precipitation descriptor for a 20 percent chance of measurable precipitation (0.01 inch). When the precipitation is convective in nature, the term widely scattered is used.

A chance, or likelihood, that a certain event might happen.
Probability forecast(6)
A forecast of the probability of occurrence of one or more of a mutually exclusive set of weather conditions.

SLGTSlightSlight ChanceIn probability of precipitation statements, usually equivalent to a 20 percent chance.Slight Risk(of severe thunderstorms)- Severe thunderstorms are expected to affect between 2 and 5 percent of the area.

probability"The chance that a prescribed event will occur, represented as a pure number p in the range 0 ≤ p ≤ 1. The probability of an impossible event is zero and that of an inevitable event is unity.

Probability - A chance, or likelihood, that a certain event might happen.

LikelyIn probability of precipitation statements, the equivalent of a 60 or 70 percent chance. LowAn area of low pressure, usually accompanied by cyclonic and inward wind flow. Also known as a cyclone.

CGCloud-to-Ground LightningChanceA National Weather Service precipitation descriptor for 30, 40, or 50 percent chance of measurable precipitation (0.01 inch). When the precipitation is convective in nature, the term scattered is used.

FewA National Weather Service convective precipitation descriptor for a 10 percent chance of measurable precipitation (0.01 inch). Few is used interchangeably with isolated.

Base FloodIn hydrologic terms, the national standard for floodplain management is the base, or one percent chance flood. This flood has at least one chance in 100 of occurring in any given year. It is also called a 100 year flood.

Few: Less than 10% chance of precipitation.
Few Clouds:Sky cover of 1/8 to 2/8 cloud cover.
FSS: Flight Service Station. FAA
FT: Terminal Forecast.
Fetch: The process of air moving over water picking up moisture.

The phrase perfect storm refers to the simultaneous occurrence of events which, taken individually, would be far less powerful than the result of their chance combination.

If the radar is in Precipitation mode, then there is a good chance that all of the visible echoes are indeed precipitation.

Sunny - little chance of the sun being obscured by cloud. High-level cirrus clouds are often thin and wispy, allowing a considerable amount of sunlight to penetrate them, sufficient to produce shadows.

According to the kinetic theory of gases, evaporation occurs when liquid molecules escape into the vapor phase as a result of the chance acquisition of above-average, outward-directed, ...

Probability of Precipitation - Probability forecasts are subjective estimates of the chances of encountering measurable precipitation at some time during the forecast period. Measurable means at least 0.

Probability - the chance that a given event will occur
Probability Forecast - a forecast of the probability that one or more of a mutually exclusive set of weather conditions will occur ...

The soft or glaciated appearance of the Cb tops and anvil suggests little chance for updraft-dependent severe weather with this storm, as these visual clues strongly suggest a relatively weak or diminishing updraft.

Beaufort force 5. Sustained wind speeds in the range of 17 to 21 knots. Moderate waves, taking a more pronounced long form; many white horses are formed (chance of some spray).
Front
The boundary between two different air masses.

The National Weather Service issues hurricane/tropical storm probablities in public advisories to realistically assess the threat of a hurricane or tropical storm hitting your community. The probablities are defined as the chance in percent that the ...

Singularity "Singularity" is a term used by climatologists to describe a highly unusual meteorological condition which tends to occur on or near a specific calendar date much more frequently than pure chance would indicate.

Upslope Flow - Air that flows toward higher terrain, and hence is forced to rise. The added lift often results in widespread low cloudiness and stratiform precipitation if the air is stable, or an increased chance of thunderstorm development if ...

The 24/7 Extended Outlook: Warm and dry for the next 5 to 7 day. Afternoon temperatures will stay near 70 through the week. In 8 to 14 days we are expecting a cool down with an increased chance for rain/snow.
Weather News ...

If there is enough moisture and the air is stable, stratiform clouds and precipitation may form. If the air is unstable, there might be an increased chance of thunderstorm development. Related term: downslope effect ...

The fact that, for example, a strong warm-ENSO event can significantly decrease Atlantic hurricane activity, and thus reduce the chance of extra-tropical elements (humidity - heat - momentum) being swept up in the mid-latitude flow, ...

The chance of being hit by a tornado is very, very small, even here, much less than that of a traffic accident. If you see a tornado moving, just watch and enjoy. Start worrying if it does not seem to move, especially if it is to the westward.

If the air is unstable, there might be an increased chance of thunderstorm development. Contrast with a downslope effect. UPSLOPE FOG Fog that forms when warm, moist surface air is forced up a slope by the wind.
