closed low"A low that may be completely encircled by an isobar or contour line.

Closed Low - A low pressure area with a distinct center of cyclonic circulation which can be completely encircled by one or more isobars or height contour lines.

CLOSED LOW: See Cutoff Low below.
COASTAL FLOODING: The inundation of land areas along the coast caused by sea water above normal tidal actions.

CLOSED LOW- A low pressure center having a closed circulation, which is used in reference to systems in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Closed lows will have one or more height contours encircling them.

CLOSED LOW A region of low pressure distinguished by a center of counterclockwise circulation (in the Northern Hemisphere), and is surrounded by one or more isobars or height contours.

"Cutoff low" and "closed low" often are used interchangeably to describe low pressure centers aloft. However, not all closed lows are completely removed from the influence of the basic westerlies.

Other areas where it may occur include near mountains, in closed lows aloft, and because of wind shear. Often referred to as CAT.

A low-pressure system, usually a closed low or cutoff low, which is not tilted with height, i.e., located similarly at all levels of the atmosphere.

Vertically-stacked System - A low-pressure system, usually a closed low or cutoff low, which is not tilted with height, i.e., located similarly at all levels of the atmosphere.

A cut-off low usually begins as a trough in the upper-air flow, which becomes a closed circulation and then extends down to the surface. Also known as closed low or cold pool.
