Cold low (or cold cyclone) At a given level in the atmosphere, any low that is generally characterized by colder air near its center than around its periphery; the opposite of a warm low.

 


Cold low (ger: Kältetief; fr: dépression froide)
Also known as a cold pool, or a polar lows, these terms refer to areas of low pressure and temperature in the middle troposphere.

Cold Low- a low pressure system with cold air mass from near the surface to all vertical levels (also called a cold core low).

COLD LOW A low pressure system that has its coldest temperatures at or near the center of circulation, and is thermally barotropic with respect to a horizontal plane. Also known as a cold core low.

Cold Low Type - This type has a circulation extending from the surface to the upper troposphere, with the maximum sustained low-level winds typically extending to a radius of 100 miles or more from the center.

(1) An upper level cold low with circulation extending to the surface and maximum sustained winds generally occurring at a radius of about 100 miles or more from the pressure center.

cut-off low - A cold low that has grown out of a trough and become displaced out of the basic westerly current and lies equatorward of this current. See cutting-off process, cut-off high, cold pool.

The wave may reach maximum amplitude in the lower middle troposphere or may be the reflection of an upper tropospheric cold low or an equatorward extension of a mid-latitude trough.

The most common type is an upper-level cold low with circulation extending to the surface layer and maximum sustained winds generally occurring at a radius of about 100 miles or more from the center.

TROUGH (TROF)- Longwave of lower heights aloft. A cold low level air mass will cause there to be troughing aloft. Rising air over a broad region such as from a mid-latitude cyclone can also create troughing.
