Contraction

Meteorology ContoursContrail

Contraction for meteorological rocket.
minimum thermometer
A thermometer designed to automatically register the lowest temperature attained during any time interval before it is set.

A contraction of a vector field; the opposite of Divergence. Convergence in a horizontal wind field indicates that more air is entering a given area than is leaving at that level.

Smog (contraction for 'smoke fog') is a fog in which smoke or other forms of atmospheric pollutant have an important part in causing the fog to thicken, and have unpleasant and dangerous physiological effects.
Snow ...

Bit A contraction of "binary digit." The basic element of a two-element (binary) computer language.

Pixel: A contraction of "picture element" representing the smallest discrete element of an electronically encoded image ( having both spatial and spectral components) recorded by a satellite sensor.

RADAR (contraction for radio detection and ranging)—An electronic instrument used for the detection and ranging of distant objects of such composition that they scatter or reflect radio energy.

prog - Common contraction for prognostic chart.
projection - The correspondence between a domain of the earth's surface and a plane surface (map) such that each point on one corresponds to one and only one point on the other.

weather observing procedures, this is reported with the contraction "SCT."ScatteringThe process in which a beam of light is diffused or deflected by collisions with particles suspended in the atmosphere.

Pibal Contraction for pilot balloon observation. Piche evaporimeter An atmometer which uses a filter paper disc as the evaporating element. The amount of water evaporated through the paper is read at the graduated tube reservoir.

FROPA: Contraction in a weather observation for "Frontal Passage". Frost: Formed when the temperature is below freezing by sublimation. Frost Advisory: An advisory issued by the National Weather Service when the formation of frost is expected.

The rapid expansion and subsequent contraction of air produces a sound wave that travels out from the source in all directions. Thunder is produced along the entire length of the lightning channel where air expands rapidly.

Subsidence by thermal contraction of the lithosphere
When the lithosphere is stretched, perhaps due to slab-pull, the lithosphere is thinned and hot asthenosphere rises into the space that is created.

It has two characteristic axes: an axis of dilatation toward which streamlines converge asymptotically, and an axis of contraction from which streamlines diverge asymptotically.

This contraction leads to a decrease in the distance, or "thickness", between constant pressure surfaces within the cooled air.

Convergence - A contraction of a vector field, usually said of winds; the opposite of divergence.

Nor'easter: Common contraction for northeaster, a northeast wind often blowing at gale or storm speeds. Also refers to a type of storm moving up the North American Atlantic coast which is first felt as a northeast wind and it moves northward.

For abreviations or contractions which appear in forecasts discussions, visit NCEP's contractions page
ADIABATIC: Occurring without loss or gain of heat. i.e., "adiabatic expansion of a body of air." ...

As with all minimum thermometers the actual thermometer is held inside a glass jacket and the contraction of the alcohol column overnight causes a small indicator within the stem of the thermometer to descend and record the lowest temperature.

Adibiatic Temperature Change- A cooling or heating of the air caused by expansion of contraction of air molecules, as opposed to the gain or loss of heat. For example, adiabatic cooling takes place as air rises.

The text will be written in plain language or in proper contractions. At the end of the discussion, there will be a list of all advisories, non-convective watches, and non-convective warnings.

Liquid-in-Glass Thermometer - A device for measuring temperature that consists of a tube with a liquid-filled bulb at one end. The expansion or contraction of the fluid indicates temperature.

Not as severe as frostbite, this distress is primarily the result of the contraction in the blood vessels near the surface of the skin. The medical term used for this condition is "acrocyanosis.
