Cyclonic Circulation

Meteorology CyclonicCyclonic Conditions

Cyclonic circulation Atmospheric circulation associated with a cyclone (depression, low pressure area). It is counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

cyclonic circulation"Fluid motion in the same sense as that of the earth, that is, counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, undefined at the equator.
cyclonic phase"See foehn phase.

Cyclonic circulation
(or cyclonic rotation) Circulation (or rotation) which is in the same sense as the Earth's rotation, i.e., clockwise (in the Southern Hemisphere) as seen from above.

A small cyclonic circulation in the early stages of development that moves along a cold front.
Wave cloud
A stationary cloud formed by the air "bouncing" over a mountain range.

Cutoff low Cyclonic circulation system that separates from the prevailing westerly airflow and therefore remains stationary.
D
Daily range of temperature The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures for any given day.

It tends to remain stationary over its source area, with weak cyclonic circulation. There are no fronts associated with it. An example is the low that develops over southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico during the summer months.

These warm top thunderstorms are often embedded in a synoptic-scale cyclonic circulation. Normally, they occur when the 500 mb cyclonic circulation is quasi-stationary or moves slowly to the east or northeast (about 2 degrees per 12 hours).

Closed LowA low pressure area with a distinct center of cyclonic circulation which can be completely encircled by one or more isobars or height contour lines.

Used in describing the history of a low pressure system or an area of cyclonic circulation, it means an increase in the central pressure of the system.

upper-level cyclone - (Also called upper-level low, upper cyclone, upper low, high-level cyclone, low aloft.) A cyclonic circulation existing in the upper air; specifically as seen on an upper-level constant-pressure chart.

A Gustnado is a type of short-lived cyclonic circulation that can form with severe thunderstorms. While it derives its name from the tornado, it has very little in common with tornadoes structurally.

Because cyclonic circulation and relatively low atmospheric pressure usually co-exist, in common practice the terms cyclone and low are used interchangeably.

An organized mass of tropical thunderstorms, with a slight cyclonic circulation, and winds less than 20 knots
Tropical Storm
An organized cyclone in the tropics with wind speed between 35 and 64 knots ...

Cyclogenesis: Any development or intensification of a cyclonic circulation in the atmosphere.

RIDGE An elongated area of high atmospheric pressure that is associated with an area of maximum anticyclonic circulation. The opposite of a trough.

It has a diameter of 250 to 500 miles and a cyclonic circulation typically extending to near 50,000 feet.

WaveIn meteorology any pattern identifiable on a weather map that has a cyclic pattern or a small cyclonic circulation in the early stages of development that moves along a cold front.
