DIFFLUENT THICKNESS PATTERN (DIFLNT THKNS PTTN) - Organized areas of thunderstorms tend to move with the thickness pattern (the mean wind in a layer). An area of diffluent thickness is an area where the thickness contours spread apart.

Distant supercells frequently have this domed, "diffluent" anvil appearance, with the supercell's tremendous updraft velocities and outflow resulting in marked upper-level divergence.
