Explosive Deepening A decrease in the minimum sea-level pressure of a tropical cyclone of 2.5 mb/hr for at least 12 hours or 5 mb/hr for at least six hours.
In low pressure systems, EXPLOSIVE DEEPENING is a term used for systems with a rapid drop is pressure in a 12 to 36 hour period, such as about 2.5 MB per hour. In tropical, hybrid, and extratropical storms, explosive deepening causes a BOMB storm.
