Humidity Definitions
Humidity is essentially the number of water vapour molecules in the air, but there are many and varied ways of expressing it.

 


Humidity - Generally, a measure of the water vapor content of the air. Popularly, it is used synonymously with relative humidity.

Humidity can make the warmth of the surrounding air feel as if it is warmer than the actual temperature would suggest, because the cooling effect of evaporation from the skin is reduced.

Relative humidity may be defined as the ratio of the water vapor density (mass per unit volume) to the saturation water vapor density, usually expressed in percent:

humidity: is the quantity of water vapor in the air. Relative humidity is the ration between the actual quantity of watervapor and the amount of watervapor that the air can hold at a given temperature.

The amount of water vapor in the air. It is often confused with relative humidity or dew point.

HUMIDITY: The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. (See relative humidity).

Humidity Recovery
The change in relative humidity over a given period of time; generally between late evening and sunrise. The moisture change in the fine fuels during this period is directly related to the amount of humidity recovery.

ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY
A type of humidity that considers the mass of water vapor present per unit volume of space. Also considered as the density of the water vapor. It is usually expressed in grams per cubic meter.

absolute humidity- the mass of water vapor in a unit volume of air.
acid rain- rain with an abnormally high acid content caused by burning of fossil fuels, which release sulfur and nitrogen oxides.

Relative Humidity- A measure of the amount of water vapor actually held by a specific volume of air in comparison to the maximum water vapor that air could hold at a constant temperature.

Relative Humidity
The ratio of the vapor pressure to the saturation vapor pressure with respect to water. This quantity is alternatively defined by the World Meteorological Organization as the ratio of the mixing ratio to the saturation mixing ratio.

Relative humidity: the ratio of the actual water vapor pressure at a given time to the vapor pressure that would occur if the air were saturated at the same ambient temperature.

Relative Humidity - a dimensionless ratio, expressed in percent, of the amount of atmospheric moisture present relative to the amount that would be present if the air were saturated.

An estimate of the amount of moisture in the air relative to the amount of moisture that the air can hold at a specific temperature.

RELATIVE HUMIDITY - Percentage scale based on the difference between temperature and dewpoint. The humidity at 100 percent means the air is saturated as in a cloud or rain. Is often high in tropical regions and very low in deserts. Also called RH.

Absolute Humidity: The ratio of the mass of water vapor present in the air to the volume occupied by the gas; the density of water vapour in the air, usually expressed as grams of water vapour per cubic metre of air.

It normally has the horizontal dimension of hundreds of miles. The homogeneity of an air mass is produced due to the extended contact, in a region of origin, with the subjacent surface with uniform temperature and humidity.

The subsiding air warms up, its relative humidity falls, and fine weather is the usual accompaniment of subsidence, though fog, stratus or stratocumulus clouds may occur under certain conditions. The contrary case is called convergence.
