Meteorology Ice NeedlesIce sheet

Ice Pellets (PL) Precipitation of transparent and translucent pellets of ice, which are round or irregular, rarely conical, and which have a diameter of 0.2" (5 mm), or less. Ice Pellets bounce when they make contact with the ground.

Ice Pellets
(abbrev. IP) Same as Sleet; defined as pellets of ice composed of frozen or mostly frozen raindrops or refrozen partially melted snowflakes. These pellets of ice usually bounce after hitting the ground or other hard surfaces.

Ice Pellets: A form of precipitation consisting of transparent or translucent pellets of ice, 5 mm (2 in) or less in diameter. Ice pellets may be spheres or irregularly shaped.

ICE PELLETS- IP / PL, Same as sleet. Frozen raindrops that strike the earth's surface.

Indian summer An unseasonably warm spell with clear skies near the middle of autumn. Usually follows a substantial period of cool weather.

Ice pellets Frozen raindrops that bounce on impact with the ground; also called sleet.

ice pellets—Small, transparent or translucent, round or irregularly shaped pellets of ice. They may be (1) hard grains that rebound on striking a hard surface or (2) pellets of snow encased in ice.

Ice pellets - small hail or sleet type of precipitation.
Graupel - snow pellets - small solid white chunks of snow.
Snow grains - very small solid chunks of snow.

Ice pellets: precipitation consisting of particles of ice less than 5 mm in diameter, occurring either as frozen raindrops or as small hailstones.
Icing: a coating of ice on a solid object.Insolation: solar radiation received at the earth's surface.

As the ice pellets once again fall through the cloud, another layer of ice is added and the hail stone grows even larger. Typically the stronger the updraft, the more times a hail stone repeats this cycle and consequently, the larger it grows.

sleet"1. See ice pellets. 2. In British terminology, and colloquially in some parts of the United States, precipitation in the form of a mixture of rain and snow.

Hail is considered to have a diameter of 5 millimeter or more; smaller bits of ice are classified as ice pellets, snow pellets, or graupel. Individual lumps are called hailstones. It is reported as "GR" in an observation and on the METAR.

ice - The solid, crystalline form of water substance; it is found in the atmosphere as snow crystals, hail, ice pellets, etc.

Heavy sleet is a relatively rare event defined as an accumulation of ice pellets covering the ground to a depth of ½" or more.Sleet WarningIssued when accumulation of sleet in excess of 1/2" is expected; this is a relatively rare scenario.

SLEET
Also known as ice pellets, it is winter precipitation in the form of small bits or pellets of ice that rebound after striking the ground or any other hard surface. It is reported as "PE" in an observation and on the METAR.

These grains usually bounce upon impact with the ground or pavement. Heavy sleet is a relatively rare event defined as an accumulation of ice pellets covering the ground to a depth of 1/2 inch or more. See Ice Pellets.

Sleet - Solid precipitation in the form of ice pellets form when raindrops, originating in warmer air aloft, freeze as they fall through subfreezing air near the surface of the Earth.

This includes drizzle, freezing drizzle, freezing rain, hail, ice crystals, ice pellets, rain, snow, snow pellets, and snow grains.

Sleet - Precipitation consisting of transparent pellets of ice, 5 millimeters or less in diameter. Also called ice pellets.

Sleet - frozen or partly frozen falling rain; ice pellets
Smog - a natural fog made heavier and darker by smoke and chemical fumes ...

Hail: Solid precipitation in the shape of vitreous ice pellets that fall from clouds type Cumulonimbus.

Sleet
Depending on the region, precipitation of rain or snow mixed, or rain and hail, or rain and ice pellets, or melting snow, or sudden and brief rainfall with wind and hail.

SLEET - Solid grains of ice which form from the freezing of raindrops or the refreezing of melted snowflakes. These small, transparent ice pellets usually bounce when they hit a hard surface.

A type of precipitation consisting of transparent pellets of ice 5 mm or less in diameter. Same as ice pellets.

Any of all of the forms of water particles, whether liquid or solid, that fall from the atmosphere and reach the ground. The forms of precipitation are: rain, drizzle, snow, snow grains, snow pellets, diamond dust, hail, and ice pellets.

The air-mass (highest altitude) ZDL is unlikely to be affected but a secondary pair of ZDL's may form as the thermal structure of the lowest 300m is distorted and either freezing rain or ice pellets, rather than 'proper' snow is the result.

It includes drizzle, rain, snow, snow pellets, snow grains, ice crystals, ice pellets, and hail. The ratio of precipitation to evaporation is the most important factor in the distribution of vegetation zones.
