Isentropic Surface

Meteorology Isentropic LiftIsobar

isentropic surface"A surface in space on which entropy (or, in meteorology, potential temperature) is everywhere equal; a constant-entropy surface.

Isentropic Surface - A two-dimensional surface containing points of equal potential temperature.
Isobar - A line connecting points of equal pressure.
Isodrosotherm - A line connecting points of equal dew point temperature.

Isentropic liftLifting of air that is traveling along an upward-sloping isentropic surface. Situations involving isentropic lift often are characterized by widespread stratiform clouds and precipitation.

An air parcel in this situation will usually move along an isentropic surface but can also be subject to other forms of forcing dependent on the situation. Baroclinic instability is a key ingredient in mid-latitude cyclogenesis.

valley volume is smaller, equivalent heat fluxes will cause larger changes in temperature in the valley volume than in the flat-floor volume.
