Kelvin wave

Meteorology Kelvin temperature scaleKilometer

Kelvin waves in the ocean always propagate with the shoreline on the right (left) in the northern (southern) hemisphere. Atmospheric Kelvin waves propagate eastward in the Northern Hemisphere.

Equatorial Kelvin wave ...

Kelvin wave"A type of low-frequency gravity wave trapped to a vertical boundary, or the equator, which propagates anticlockwise (in the Northern Hemisphere) around a basin.

Kelvin Waves
Fluctuations in wind speed at the ocean surface at the Equator result in eastward propagating waves, known as Kelvin Waves.

Fluctuations in wind speed at the ocean surface at the Equator result in eastward propagating waves, known as Kelvin Waves.

KELVIN WAVE - A surge of a fluid caused by differing densities in that fluid. Mixing of warm and cold air at different densities can produce such waves.

The westerly anomalies cause the development of a Kelvin wave in the ocean which slowly propagates eastward. During the warm phase of the SO severe drought occurs over Indonesia and Australia.
