static stability"(Also called hydrostatic stability, vertical stability.) The ability of a fluid at rest to become turbulent or laminar due to the effects of buoyancy.
When a wind is blowing, a laminar boundary layer is formed near the surface which is dominated by the molecular viscosity of the air. There is a relatively large velocity gradient in this layer, but it is not very thick.
For higher speeds, so-called form drag or pressure drag arises as a result of separation of the laminar boundary layer creating a wake region of chaotic flow in which the pressure is reduced.
Above the mid-level cloud band, an extremely hard Cb top is barely visible (upper right) towering into the anvil. Note the smooth, "laminar" flanking line on the extreme left.
