Lightning is whitish in color, having the combined spectrum of Oxygen and Nitrogen. It sometimes appears differently colored against different backgrounds and surroundings in contrast to yellowish artificial lights.

When the difference between the positive and negative charges becomes great, the electrical charge jumps from one area to another, creating a lightning bolt. Most lightning bolts strike from one cloud to another, but they also can strike the ground.

Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance warning. Severe thunderstorms will also produce frequent and dangerous lightning. Action: Seek safe shelter immediately. Criteria: Hail- 3/4 inch or larger; Wind- 58 mph or greater.
nimbostratus: usually considered a middle cloud, is gray and often dark. The edges are not easy to see because of continuously falling rain, snow, or sleet. This cloud does not have lightning, thunder or hail.
