Meteorology Low pressureLow pressure system

A low pressure area, or a low for short, is a region where the atmospheric pressure is lowest with relation to the surrounding area.

Low Pressure Area - or a "Low" An area of low atmospheric pressure that has a closed counter-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. Also known as a cyclone.
-M- ...

Low or Low Pressure Area- an area of low pressure usually characterized by clouds of precipitation caused by rising air; often related to inclement weather such as winds flowing counter clockwise and into the center of the low.

LOW PRESSURE AREA - An area of low atmospheric pressure which generally means poor visibility for flying.

M ...

A low pressure area which is warmer at its center than at its periphery. Tropical cyclones exhibit this temperature pattern. Unlike cold core lows, these lows produce much of their cloud cover and precipitation during the nighttime.
Warm Front ...

A low pressure area with a distinct centre of cyclonic circulation which can be completely encircled by one or more isobars or height contour lines. The term is usually used to distinguish a low pressure area aloft from a low-pressure trough.

BOMB - A low pressure area undergoing rapid or explosive intensification (more than 1 MB per hour). The term is most commonly applied to rapidly intensifying hurricanes and extratropical storms.

mesolow"A low pressure area on the mesoscale. It has been used to refer both to features observed within convective storms and features even larger in scale.

It blocks the movement eastward movement of low pressure areas (cyclones) at its latitude.Blowing DustDust that is raised by the wind to moderate heights above the ground to a degree that horizontal visibility decreases to less than seven miles.

It is associated with the location and motion of the high and low pressure areas of the middle latitudes, and therefore, is variable in position, elevation, and wind speed.

This low pressure area is usually accompanied by light snow, strong winds, and colder temperatures. Another variation of the same system is called a "Saskatchewan Screamer".ALERTAutomated Local Event Reporting in Real Time.

Hurricanes, typhoons, and willy-willies all start out as weak low pressure areas that form over warm tropical waters (e.g., surface water temperature of at least 80 °F). Initially, winds and cloud formations over the warm tropical waters are minimal.

Along with warm water, there must be an existing low pressure area such as the Monsoon Trough. This trough forms between two wind systems.

The NGM is a short range model that forecasts variables such as temperature at various levels of the atmosphere, amount of precipitation, position of upper level troughs and ridges, and the position of surface high and low pressure areas.

A closed-circulation low pressure area of tropical origin with maximum sustained winds of less than 34 knots.
Tropical storm
A storm of tropical origin with maximum sustained winds in the range of 34-63 knots.

Once calculated, horizontal variations of sea level pressure may be compared for location of high and low pressure areas and fronts.Sea Surface TemperaturesThe term refers to the mean temperature of the ocean in the upper few meters.

Cyclonic circulation Atmospheric circulation associated with a cyclone (depression, low pressure area). It is counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Leveche A warm wind in Spain, either a foehn or a hot southerly wind in advance of a low pressure area moving from the Sahara Desert. Called a SIROCCO in other parts of the Mediterranean area.

DRY PUNCH- This is in reference to a region of drier air filtering toward a mid-latitude cyclone or sub-synoptic scale low pressure area. It often has a fan shape with the small end of the fan connecting to the cyclone.

DISTURBANCE - a disruption of the atmosphere that usually refers to a low pressure area, cool air and inclement weather.

trade winds: wind system in the tropics that blows from the subtropical high pressure areas to the equatorial low pressure area. They are northeast winds in the Northern Hemisphere and southeast winds in the Southern Hemisphere.

A fast moving low pressure system that moves southeast out of Canadian Province of Alberta (southwest Canada) through the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes region usually during the winter. This low pressure area is usually accompanied by light snow, ...

Alberta Clipper A fast moving low pressure system that moves southeast out of Canadian Province of Alberta (southwest Canada) through the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes region usually during the winter. This low pressure area is usually ...

Synoptic Scale (or Large Scale) - Size scale referring generally to weather systems with horizontal dimensions of several hundred miles or more. Most high and low pressure areas seen on weather maps are synoptic-scale systems.

Normally the depth of intensity of the low pressure areas exceeds the intensity of the high pressure areas, so that the region is one of low pressure on the average.
