meridian"The great circle on the earth that passes through the North Pole, the point in question, and the South Pole. Meridians intersect the equator at right angles.
Meridian - a imaginary line on the earth's surface passing through both geographic poles and through any given point on the planet, also called a line of longitude ...
Prime Meridian An imaginary line running from north to south through Greenwich, England, used as the reference point for longitude.
Central Meridian Passage (CMP) In solar-terrestrial terms, the passage of an Active Region or other feature across the longitude meridian that passes through the apparent center of the solar disk. CFC ...
meridian: If a circle is drawn vertically around Earth at its largest point and ran through both poles, one half of that circle running from the North pole to the South pole would be a meridian. Describes a line of longitude.
Solar CoordinatesIn solar-terrestrial terms, Central Meridian Distance (CMD).
MAGNETIC POLES Either of the two points on the earth's surface where the magnetic meridians converge. They are not aligned with the geographical poles, but shift and do not lie exactly opposite of the other.
This is also the Prime Meridian of Longitude. The globe is divided into twenty-four (24) time zones of 15 degrees of arc, or one hour in time apart.
Because the meridian lines converge at the poles, the true course of a line changes continuously except when it is actually meridional or when it is curved so as always to cross meridians at the same angle.
Weather data is reported in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and this system is based upon a 24-hour clock of time measured along the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) in Greenwich, England.
By international agreement, the local time at the prime meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England.
Greenwich Mean Time - GMT is the global standard for time that was established in 1884 when delegates from 27 nations met in Washington, DC for the Meridian Conference and agreed on a system basically the same as that now in use.
LONGITUDE The location east or west in reference to the Prime Meridian, which is designated as zero (0) degrees longitude.
Longitude The angular distance measured east or west of a prime meridian from a point at the center of the Earth. A line connecting all points of the same longitude is called a meridian. Longwave Radiation See infrared radiation.
In 1735 Bouguer sailed with Charles Marie de La Condamine for Peru, in order to measure a degree of the meridian near the equator.
Meridional - In the north-south direction; along a meridian. Macroscale - A large scale event usually measured in 10,000's of kilometers and weeks of time; a planetary scale event; e.g. long waves in the jet stream.
GREENWICH MEAN TIME (GMT): Time standard based upon the Prime Meridian and used for most meteorological applications and activities. See UTC and ZULU. GOES: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite ...
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) The time in the zero degree meridian time zone. In order to convert to Eastern Standard Time, subtract 5 hours (Eastern Daylight Time subtract 4 hours). For example, 0900 UTC is 4:00 AM EST or 5:00 AM EDT.
The term hurricane is used for Northern Hemisphere cyclones east of the International Dateline to the Greenwich Meridian. It has a diameter of 250 to 500 miles and a cyclonic circulation typically extending to near 50,000 feet.
Large-scale atmospheric flow in which the north-south component (i.e., longitudinal, or along a meridian) is pronounced. The accompanying zonal (east-west) component often is weaker than normal. Compare with zonal flow. Meso ...
Meridional circulation An atmospheric circulation in a vertical plane oriented along a meridian. It consists, therefore, of the vertical and the meridional (North or South) components of motion only.
Meridional Flow - Large-scale atmospheric flow in which the north-south component (i.e., longitudinal, or along a meridian) is pronounced. The accompanying zonal (east-west) component often is weaker than normal. Compare with zonal flow.
The Geostationary satellite 36000 Km above the equator and on the Greenwich meridian. Microburst A downburst from a thunderstorm that is confined to a small area.
Meteorological reports all follow the Universal Time Coordinated System (UTC), formally referred to as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or referenced often by the military as Z time, all meaning the clock time at the Prime Meridian of longitude located at ...
Longitude - The position of the Earth's surface east or west of the Greenwich meridian.
Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) A worldwide time reference used for synchronizing weather observations; the time at 0 degrees longitude, the prime meridian.
The notation formerly used to identify time Greenwich MeanTime. The word "Zulu" is notation in the phonetic alphabet corresponding to the letter "Z" assigned to the time zone on the Greenwich Prime Meridian.
Zulu time The mean solar time for the meridian at Greenwich, England, used as a basis for calculating time in communications, military, aviation, maritime and other activities that cross time zones.
