Millibar: A metric measurement of air pressure.
North Atlantic Basin (sometimes called just the "Atlantic Basin"): The Atlantic Ocean north of the equator, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

 


Millibars-Unit of atmospheric pressure. Other possible units of pressure used by scientists are inches of Mercury, and torr.

MILLIBAR (MB) The standard unit of measurement for atmospheric pressure used by the National Weather Service. One millibar is equivalent to 100 newtons per square meter. Standard surface pressure is 1,013.2 millibars.

MILLIBAR (MB): A unit of atmospheric pressure. 1 mb = 100 Pa (pascal). Normal surface pressure is approximately 1013 millibars.

1 millibar (or hectopascal/hPa), is equivalent to 0.02953 inches of mercury (Hg). It is therefore only necessary to multiply a reading in millibars by the latter figure, to achieve the required conversion. E.g. for 1023 mbar, multiply by 0.02953=30.

To convert millibars (mb) to inches of mercury (in Hg), divide the millibar reading by 33.86:
in Hg = mb / 33.

It is determined by lifting an air parcel to 500 millibars and then comparing its temperature to that of the environment. If the parcel is colder than its new environment, then the atmosphere is more stable.

Reference is usually made to the manually produced 6- to 10-day Northern Hemisphere prognoses for mean 500 millibar heights and mean 500 millibar height anomalies. Discussions may also refer to the method of operational ensemble predictions.

Pressure is usually measured in millibars, 1 mb = 103 dyne/cm2. Distance is conveniently measured in the length of a degree of latitude, which is 111 km or 69 mi. Then, a pressure gradient of 1 mb per degree of latitude is 8.993 x 10-5 dyne/cm2/cm.

The most common unit used is the millibar (1 millibar equals 1000 dynes cm−2).

The layer most often used in meteorology is between 1000 and 500 millibars.

2 millibars (mb), dew will form when the ground reaches 45 degrees Fahrenheit (F). The relative humidity for air containing 10.2 mb of water vapor is simply 100% times 10.2 mb divided by the saturation vapor pressure at the actual temperature.
