Millibars-Unit of atmospheric pressure. Other possible units of pressure used by scientists are inches of Mercury, and torr.

 


To convert millibars (mb) to inches of mercury (in Hg), divide the millibar reading by 33.86:
in Hg = mb / 33.

It is determined by lifting an air parcel to 500 millibars and then comparing its temperature to that of the environment. If the parcel is colder than its new environment, then the atmosphere is more stable.

- The temperature a parcel of air would have if
a) it was lifted until it became saturated,
b) all water vapor was condensed out, and
c) it was returned adiabatically (i.e., without transfer of heat or mass) to a pressure of 1000 millibars.

Bar A unit of pressure equal to 106 dyne per cm² (106 barye), 1000 millibars, 29.53 inches of mercury. Barogram The record of a barograph. Barograph A continuous-recording barometer.

Centibar The pressure unit of the meter-ton-second system of physical units, equal to 10 millibars or 104 dynes per cm². Centigrade temperature scale The older name for the Celsius temperature scale.

In aviation weather reports (METAR), QNH is transmitted around the world in millibars or hectopascals, except in the United States and Canada where it is reported in inches of mercury.

Pressure is usually measured in millibars, 1 mb = 103 dyne/cm2. Distance is conveniently measured in the length of a degree of latitude, which is 111 km or 69 mi. Then, a pressure gradient of 1 mb per degree of latitude is 8.993 x 10-5 dyne/cm2/cm.

The layer most often used in meteorology is between 1000 and 500 millibars.

2 millibars (mb), dew will form when the ground reaches 45 degrees Fahrenheit (F). The relative humidity for air containing 10.2 mb of water vapor is simply 100% times 10.2 mb divided by the saturation vapor pressure at the actual temperature.

Air pressure is usually measured in millibars or in inches of mercury. Mercury in the tube adjusts until the weight of the mercury column balances the atmospheric force exerted on the reservoir.

CONDENSATION PRESSURE DEFICIT (COND PRES DEF)- On an isentropic chart (a layer of constant potential temperature), condensation pressure deficit represents the amount of lift, expressed in millibars, needed to saturate an air parcel.

Kilopascal- A metric unit of air pressure. It is simply millibars divided by 10.

A large expanse of air having similar temperature and humidity at any given height.
