mistral"A north wind that blows down the Rhone valley south of Valence, France, and into the Gulf of Lions. It is strong, squally, cold, and dry, the combined result of the basic circulation, a fall wind, and jet-effect wind.

 


Mistral A cold, dry wind blowing from the north over the northwest coast of the Mediterranean Sea, particularly over the Gulf of Lions. Also called CIERZO. See also FALL WIND.

Mistral A katabatic wind that flows from the Alps down the Rhone River Valley of France to the Mediterranean coast.
Mixing ratio The ratio of the mass of water vapor in a given volume of air to the mass of dry air.

This southeast wind is called the Sirocco in Italy. A wind in the opposite direction is the Mistral of Mediterranean France, a cold northwest wind. These are simply a few famous examples of named seasonal winds.

These may be further subdivided into barrier jets, gap winds, downslope windstorms, and include such local phenomena as the tehuantepecer, Santa Ana, foehn, mistral, and bora.
