Nimbostratus Clouds dark, low-level clouds with precipitation
Nimbostratus are dark, low-level clouds accompanied by light to moderately falling precipitation.

Nimbostratus (Ns) A principal cloud type (cloud genus), gray colored and often dark, rendered diffuse by more or less continuously falling rain, snow, sleet, etc. of the ordinary varieties and not accompanied by lightning, thunder, or hail.

Nimbostratus
(Ns) Latin "nimbus" - violent rain, "stratus" - layer
A dark grey-looking cloud that often covers the entire sky. Some definitions of Nimbostratus include a required rainfall rate.

NIMBOSTRATUS
This cloud exhibits a combination of rain or snow, and sometimes the base of the cloud cannot be seen because of the heaviness of precipitation.

Nimbostratus (Ns) A dark, gray cloud characterized by more or less continuously falling precipitation. It is not accompanied by lightning, thunder, or hail. They normally occur between 6,500 and 23,000 feet above the ground.

Nimbostratus
(abbrev. NS)- A cloud of the class characterized by a formless layer that is almost uniformly dark gray; a rain cloud of the layer type, of low altitude, usually below 8000 ft (2400 m).

Nimbostratus: A precipitation-producing layered clouds.
Nitric oxide (NO): A byproduct of high temperature combustion, such as in automobile engines and electric power generation.

Nimbostratus (Ns) Low, gray, layered clouds that resemble stratus clouds but are thicker and yield more substantial precipitation.

Nimbostratus We have already seen this type of cloud several times this month. This term is derived from the original Latin based cloud classification system proposed by Englishman Luke Howard in 1803.

NIMBOSTRATUS - Low to mid level, depending on the environment, layered clouds producing precipitation. They are not cumiliform like the cumulonimbis clouds. Clouds usually composed of water droplets that may or may not be mixed with ice crystals.

nimbostratus: usually considered a middle cloud, is gray and often dark. The edges are not easy to see because of continuously falling rain, snow, or sleet. This cloud does not have lightning, thunder or hail.
nimbus: a rain cloud.

SCUD Low fragments of clouds, usually stratus fractus, that are unattached and below a layer of higher clouds, either nimbostratus or cumulonimbus.

Most often applied when such clouds are moving rapidly beneath a layer of nimbostratus.

Altocumulus, altostratus, and nimbostratus are the main types of middle clouds. This altitude applies to the temperate zone. In the polar regions, these clouds may be found at lower altitudes.

It may also form from the rising of stratus, and by the convective or undulatory transformation of stratus, or nimbostratus, with or without change of height (Sc stratomutatus or Sc nimbostratomutatus).

stratus (unbroken layer of cloud), nimbostratus (dark, unbroken layer, rain cloud)
cumulus (puffy, irregular clouds), stratocumulus (cumulus clouds arranged in a broad layer)
clouds of vertical development ...

Middle Clouds In the middle family are the altostratus, altocumulus, and nimbostratus clouds. The height of the bases of these clouds ranges from 6,500 to 23,000 feet in middle latitudes.

In the 'Medium' cloud class come: Altostratus (As); Altocumulus (Ac) and Nimbostratus (Ns). Nimbostratus often has a base within the 'low' cloud category.
In the 'High' cloud group are: Cirrus (Ci); Cirrocumulus (Cc) and Cirrostratus (Cs).

Coalescence Process: The process by which water droplts falling collied (Coalescence) and grow larger.

Other clouds could be described by combining the basic types. For example, nimbostratus is a rain cloud that occurs in layers, whereas cumulonimbus is a rain cloud with pronounced vertical development.

A cloud of a class characterized by a generally uniform gray sheet or layer, lighter in color than nimbostratus and darker than cirrostratus. These clouds are of medium altitude, about 8000 to 20,000 ft (2400-6100 m).

Abbreviation for Altostratus, a cloud of a class characterized by a generally uniform gray sheet or layer, lighter in color than nimbostratus and darker than cirrostratus. These clouds are of medium altitude, about 8000 to 20,000 ft (2400-6100 m).

Nimbus: The Latin word for "rain" used to describe a cloud or group of clouds from which rain is falling, e.g., nimbostratus.

20,000 ft and above are the cirrus or cirro clouds (cirrocumulus, cirrostratus), composed of mostly ice crystals; from 6,500 to 20,000ft are the alto clouds (altostratus, altocumulus); Low clouds develop up to 6,500ft (stratocumulus, nimbostratus) , ...

The Bergeron process competes with growth and coalescence of droplets in clouds above 0°C, which can create drizzle in nimbostratus, and rain in tropical convective storms.

Finally, if the temperature becomes low enough in a cloud, as it does in nimbostratus and cumulonimbus clouds, microscopic ice crystals may also serve as condensation nuclei for the cloud in a process known as the Bergeron process.

Low clouds are found up to 6,500 feet and include the stratocumulus and nimbostratus clouds. When stratus clouds contact the ground they are called fog. Vertical clouds, such as cumulus, rise far above their bases and can form at many heights.
