Meteorology ObliquityObscurations

obscuration"1. (Also called obscured sky cover.) In U.S. weather observing practice, the designation for the sky cover when the sky is completely hidden by surface-based obscuring phenomena.

OBSCURATION Any phenomena in the atmosphere, excluding precipitation, that reduces horizontal visibility.

Obscuration - the term used when the sky is completely hidden by surface-based obscuring phenomena
Obscuring Phenomena - any atmospheric phenomenon, except clouds, that restricts vertical visibility (e.g., dust, rain, snow, etc.).

Obscuration
Any atmospheric phenomenon, except clouds, that restricts vertical visibility (e.g., dust, rain, snow, etc.).
Obscuring Phenomena ...

obscuration—Denotes sky hidden by surface-based obscuring phenomena and vertical visibility restricted overhead.
obscuring phenomena—Any hydrometeor or lithometeor other than clouds; may be surface based or aloft.

Obscuration- Any phenomenon in the atmosphere, other than precipitation, that reduces the horizontal visibility in the atmosphere.

The following classifications are used in aviation weather observations: clear, scattered, broken, overcast, partial obscuration, obscuration. Skyhook balloon A large plastic constant-level balloon for duration flying at very high altitudes.

opacity The degree of obscuration of light; for example, a glass window has almost 0% opacity, whereas a concrete wall has 100% opacity.

Obscuration: The amount of sky that is hidden by snow, rain, fog, dust, haze, etc.
Obstruction To Visibility: Any form of precipitation, fog, smoke, haze, dust, dirt volcanic ash. ocean spray which obscures the visibility below 7 miles.

The amount of sky cover for each layer is given in eighths of sky cover attributable to clouds or obscurations.

clear sky - A sky free of clouds and other obscurations as observed from the point of observation.
clearing - A process of clouds, fog, or other obscurations becoming less prevalent with time.

The state of the sky when no clouds or obscurations are observed.
Clear air turbulence
Name given to turbulence that may occur in clear air without any visual warning in the form of clouds.

Clear Skies Skies are clear when no clouds or obscurations are observed or detected from the point of observation.

CEILING: The height ascribed to the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena when it is reported as broken, overcast, or obscuration and not classified as thin or partial.

Layer - An array of clouds and/or obscurations whose bases are at approximately the same level.

In the Airmet Sierra bulletin:
Ceilings less than 1000 feet and/or visibility less than 3 miles affecting over 50% of the area at one time.
Extensive mountain obscuration ...

ElementOne of the basic conditions of the atmosphere discussed in this FMH (wind, visibility, runway visual range, weather, obscurations, sky condition, temperature and dewpoint, and pressure).
